Full disclosure, no one’s asked me this exact question, but people often look a little confused when I recommend that they use Squarespace or Wix over something like WordPress or Webflow. Why would I, someone who obsesses over fonts and the perfect shade of purple be such a fan of kit-form websites?

I’m a fan because they do so much of the heavy lifting that small businesses don’t have the time or resources for. And if you do it right, you don’t have to compromise on great web design, or worry that it has the look of a Squarespace website.
See what I mean?
If you’re running your marketing on a shoestring budget, these self-service (SaaS if you want to be fancy) platforms are a lifesaver. (I’m not on commission. I just feel very strongly about helping you cut out unnecessary cost and faff.) It all comes down to understanding how they work and configuring the features to your needs. Here’s how I do it:
-
- I’ll start with a chat about your business, audience, goals and brand so I know what your new website needs to do, beyond looking brilliant.
-
- I’ll also provide you with a detailed list of all things I need from you. Brand guidelines, copy and pics. I’ll start work as soon as I have everything I need or an ETA on its arrival. (You might be organising a photoshoot specifically for your website, or commissioning a copywriter, so we’ll organise production around that)
-
- Once I have everything I need, I’ll create a homepage and site structure for you to review, with two
rounds of feedback/amends before we sign off the look and feel.

-
- Then we move on to creating the rest of the pages, and you get two rounds of tweaks at this stage too.
- Before you launch your website, I’ll make sure we have a handover where I show you how I’ve set up your website and customised the structure for you. We’ll go through the dos and don’ts when it comes to keeping your pages up-to-date and looking fantastic. I’ll also make sure you have a duplicate set of pages, so you have a back-up in case you need it.
That’s not the end though. Websites take a little time to bed in, so I’ll be on-hand for a month after sign-off for any snags that may crop up.
The way Squarespace-style websites are set up also means you can keep things updated yourself (no need to worry about those under-the-hood techy bits) without a developer. But you can still bring one in for little fun bits, as your business and budget grow.
So whether you’re a freelance photographer, a garden designer, or a stage production, using something like Squarespace can work for you.
I can help! Book a quick no-strings chat with me, and I’ll show you how.
